Chapter 18 Weird

Ethan had planned to clear a few levels of the simulator while he studied how to create some magic projectiles, but at the end of the day, he didn\'t even reach the second stage. Understanding the logic behind the slimes\' magic was more difficult than he thought, and since there was no sense in reaching the next stage without learning such a simple magic, he didn\'t it. As if that wasn\'t enough, the more his resistances leveled up, the slower, the harder it became to make them level up. The process was already made to be like that, but since he was receiving less and less damage, Ethan didn\'t progress as much as he thought he would.

"Not bad for a single day of progress, I guess," Ethan shrugged. "Still, I should have known that I wouldn\'t progress so fast playing with slimes."

When Ethan left the simulator, it was 05:00 PM. Only a few classes still were active, so that floor had quite a bit of students. That much was expected, but Ethan didn\'t expect that so many of them would be watching his runs on the simulator and also in front of the room he used. Some of them were frowning, while others were having a hard time controlling their laughs. Emily and Ian were among them. Emily was frowning while Ian was holding his laugh.

"I guess playing with slimes isn\'t something many students do."

Ethan wanted to take his time and then select some souvenirs for his family, but since he didn\'t like to be stared at, he decided to return and buy things from home. The very moment he touched his wristwatch, he heard someone calling his name.

"Wait, wait!" Ian said.

Nothing good would come out from involving himself with Lyla\'s students since he left them with a bad impression. So, Ethan ignored him and returned home. Although he appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the living room, Michael and Evelyn didn\'t even flinch. They were probably used to seeing Hannah coming and going just like that.

"Welcome back, Ethan," Evelyn smiled. "You returned much sooner than we thought."

"Yeah, we thought you would return only after two or three days due to that simulator thingy," Michael said while grinning. "It looks like you are that addicted to games anymore."

"Come on…" Ethan sighed. "I would never do something like that. Besides, it isn\'t like I spent so much time gaming in the past."

That was one weak excuse, and they made his parents laugh even more. Ethan liked to game so much that his parents called him the ghost of the second floor in the past. Since he barely saw the sunlight during the weekends.

"It looks like big sis isn\'t at home," Ethan said while looking at the ceiling. "Is she working? What does she do for the government?"

"I really don\'t know," Michael replied. "I\'m not good with tech or magic stuff."

"Putting in simple terms, Hannah is one of the few mages out there who can open portal between worlds and make them usable," Evelyn said. "I\'m not too knowledgeable about this either, but apparently, a portal needs to be stable to be used, or those who use it might end up getting seriously hurt or being transported to unknown worlds."

It looked like Hannah was more amazing than she looked. Although Ethan only made use of stable portals created by unknown beings, he could imagine how dangerous it would be to use an unstable portal. For someone like him who was having a hard learning how to create a Fireball, creating a portal between worlds seemed more impressive than defeating a demon king.

"Thanks to her powers, she is also responsible for the diplomacy between Earth and many planets," Evelyn added.

"I wonder if that job really suits her," Ethan frowned. "Big sis is the type who can\'t stay serious for long and that ends up making jokes at inappropriate moments."

"Ethan…" Michael said.

"I\'m joking," Ethan laughed. "She does have many contacts with the government, right? I was wondering if she could give me a hand with something. I need to talk to her, but I don\'t have a phone, and I probably shouldn\'t call her while she is away."

"I\'m pretty sure I saw your sister using that wristwatch as a phone a few times," Michael frowned. "Can\'t you do the same?"

Ethan didn\'t hear anything about that, but he decided to try anyway. There were no numbers on the screen, and even though he looked for a while, he didn\'t find a telephone list or anything similar that could start a call. So, Ethan decided to use his voice.

"Call the residence number of Michael Harrison," Ethan said.

Weirdly enough, at that moment, the phone of their house began to ring. That was a rarity nowadays, but Ethan was more interested in how come a simple wristwatch could do so many things. Since Ethan stayed for too long in the simulator nonstop, he was pretty hungry. So, he waited for dinner patiently before stuffing himself with his mother\'s home cooking. His body was fine, but his mind was tired after training for so long. Despite the fact that it hadn\'t been that intense, Ethan headed to his room after dinner to rest and meditate.

"I don\'t know when big sis will return, so I need to solve this problem myself," Ethan muttered while lying on his bed and facing the ceiling. "How can I control my mana?"

While meditating, Ethan recalled hundreds of times the presence of slimes he faced that day. The things he felt when they cast the spells and when the spells hit him. Still, he couldn\'t quite replicate their actions. Although he could replicate the physical skills he learned due to his second class, the same thing couldn\'t apply to magic. Ethan didn\'t have much mana, but the small amount he had, didn\'t respond to his will in any way.

"Maybe if I increase my mana pool…" Ethan muttered. "If I remember correctly, I already had quite a bit of mana when I used my first spell. I wonder if that is the problem… I don\'t have much, so even though I can feel it, I can\'t control it. It must be a matter of experience and skill."
