Chapter 8
“Daddy.” Tutu tugged at the corner of Su Wei’s shirt.
“Tutu, daddy is thirsty. Can you get daddy a glass of water?” Su Wei wanted to send his son away.
“Okay.” The boy walked away unwillingly.
“I’m sorry.” Xu Xiaoxiao held back her tears and apologized.
“It’s alright. Come and help me. This firewood is quite heavy.” Su Wei consoled her.
[Is Su Wei that good? He actually didn’t care about it.]
[Boring. Let’s go.]
Although Su Wei was the boss of Jintang Media, he felt he wasn’t neary good enough for Xu Xiaoxiao. He thought he looked average and felt fat.
A year ago, his ex-wife had asked for a divorce, and they barely talked after that. He had met Xu Xiaoxiao and fell in love with her at first sight. They got together after the divorce. But everyone thought Xu Xiaoxao was the other woman who had broken up his marriage. Even his mother thought she had destroyed their family when Xu Xiaoxiao wasn’t at fault.
Su Wei felt that he didn’t deserve her. He knew she was having a hard time. So, he doted on her. He had brought Xu Xiaoxiao to the variety show with the help of his son in order to make her famous.
Su Wei knew how difficult it was to deal with Tutu. Xu Xiaoxiao had been holding back during the livestream last night. It must be her son’s fault again today. Every time he tried to punish Tutu, Xu Xiaoxiao defended and supported Tutu saying he was just a kid and didn’t know any better.
Su Wei felt heartbroken when Xu Xiaoxiao tried so hard and still apologized when nothing was her fault. If it were not for the live broadcast, he would have beaten his son up.
Tutu poured a glass of water. Seeing that his father and Xu Xiaoxiao weren’t quarreling and were working happily together, the boy stomped his feet and threw the glass on the ground. “I’m going to play with Jiejie.”
In the vegetable field, Li Zekai was still digging away while Lin Wan hid behind the tree trunk.
When she saw Xiao Yi’s family, Tutu greeted them warmly.
[Little fatty is here. Why do I feel like he’s only being stubborn with Xu Xiaoxiao, but he’s very polite to everyone else?]
[That’s true.]
“Jiejie, why are you digging vegetables alone?” Tutu plopped down next to Li Zekai. The reason why he looked for Li Zekai was because he felt that Li Zekai was in the same boat as him. They were about the same age, and both had stepmothers who had snatched their fathers away.
“Digging vegetables is fun. I like digging vegetables,” said Li Zekai in a raised voice. He had seen the camera of the live broadcast on the bean stand.
“Where’s aunt Lin?” Tutu asked again. They had just gone to Li Zekai’s house, and Li Yanchen had said that he and his stepmother were doing other tasks in the vegetable field.
Li Zekai pointed at the tree. “I’m almost done digging. So, I am letting her rest.”
Tutu saw a woman slacking off behind the tree. “Your stepmother is as evil as my father’s girlfriend. Jiejie, you have to be careful of her,” Tutu said in a low voice.
[What are the two of them talking about?]
[Tutu is helping Jiejie dig for vegetables. Doesn’t Tutu know that he has his task too?]
[Lin Wan can’t be sleeping there, right? Can the staff wake her up? Everyone’s busy, but she’s the only one who’s acting like this.]
Lin Wan had indeed fallen asleep while leaning against the big tree. She had not been able to sleep the entire night, and she had woken up at dawn. She had been reminiscing about her grandmother when she fell asleep against the tree.
After Li Yanchen made arrangements for his two sons, he decided to go to the vegetable field to see how Lin Wan and Li Zekai were getting along.
When they saw Li Yanchen, Xiao Yi’s parents nodded their heads politely as a greeting.
When Li Zekai saw his father approach, he felt that all his effort he had put into digging the vegetables and all the sweat dripping into his mouth was worth it.
Li Yanchen looked around but could not see Lin Wan. “Where’s aunt Lin?” he asked his son.
“Over there.” Tutu answered on his behalf.
Li Yanchen took the basket from Li Zekai. “That’s enough. Let’s go home. ” He walked towards Lin Wan.
The woman’s long eyelashes fell on her face. She was curled up with a half-eaten radish in her arms. Her head was leaning against a big tree. Her chest rose and fell as she breathed. She was sleeping soundly. However, her cheeks were wet.
Li Yanchen was stunned. ‘Is she crying?’ She had fallen asleep crying.
When he had first met Lin Wan, she had been crying then, too. The doctor had said that her mental illness had reached a very serious stage. After he rented a house for Lin Wan to stay comfortably. She had finally stopped crying but it was replaced by a dreadful silence. The doctor had said that her condition seemed to have improved but not by much. One day, Lin Wan had climbed to the top floor and tried to kill herself. Li Yanchen had married her because he wanted to take care of her.
When he had seen her in the morning, Li Yanchen had felt for a moment that Lin Wan had become more optimistic. He now thought that she must have been pretending to be fine in front of the camera. She had broken down in the end. ‘Was that why she volunteered to come here with Li Zekai?’
He leaned down and picked Lin Wan up, ready to take her home. Even if it wasn’t love between them, she was still his responsibility, and he could not let her hurt herself.
[My God, is your son really your biological son?]
[Lin Wan is asleep. Shouldn’t we wake her up and give her a scolding?]
[I have to say that Li Yanchen is really good. God, please give me a man like him!]
[Jiejie seems to be aggrieved? Look at how dirty his little hands are, and Li Yanchen doesn’t even care!]
[He’s so cruel to his sons. There are two others chopping firewood at home.]
[What did Lin Wan do?]
[I don’t think Li Yanchen is a lecherous person. Otherwise, why would he be so cold to Xu Xiaoxiao just now? Xu Xiaoxiao is young and pretty too.]
[Then why?]
Tutu looked at Li Zekai’s father and realized that he was indeed lucky. Whenever he went to complain to his father, he always listened to what he had to say. He had even placed a hand on his head to comfort him. felt that she was still lucky. Uncle Li ran straight to his girlfriend. Li Zekai was so obedient, but his father didn’t even care.
Tutu pulled at Li Zekai’s hand. “Auntie might be sick. Jiejie, I’ll take you home and help you carry the basket.”
[What kind of tragic scene is this? Even our little tyrant sympathizes with Jiejie.]
“Okay.” Li Zekai accepted Tutu’s help and his disgust for this stepmother grew deeper.
Perhaps because she was a light sleeper, Lin Wan felt herself being lifted up. Her eyes fluttered open, and she saw the man’s face which made her head spin.
“What are you doing?” Lin Wan lifted her hand that had unknowingly rested on his chest.
“Oh, you’re awake.” He put her down.
“I fell asleep. I’m too tired. ” Lin Wan covered her face in embarrassment. Fortunately, there were no surveillance cameras on the road.
...
“Auntie, you dug up one radish and fell asleep while eating it. This is the radish that you haven’t finished eating. I’m still holding it for you.” Li Zekai explained to her while he held the white radish up for her to see.
When Lin Wan heard this, she ran home, ashamed.
In the Li family’s livestream room, the bullet screen was full of comments about the vegetable field:
[A man like Li Yanchen is worth marrying.]
[Why do I feel that Lin Wan is so cute? Eating radish and falling asleep.]
[Rich people love to eat carrots, too? How down-to-earth!]
