The assistant lowered his head deeply. “That’s right. They are just waiting for the official paperwork. Since software is patent protected from the day of application, the authorization agreement we’ve made Mr. Qi sign is not legally binding.”
Wei Yong looked annoyed. President Xue had just brought up the subject of the patent earlier in the lift. If they did not have the patent for the project, it would be an absolute embarrassment for his department.
The assistant said cautiously, “I have asked Secretary Wang. Unless the students choose to give up the application, there is no way for us to get the patent.”
“What’s Mr. Qi’s take on this?” asked Wei Yong.
“He didn’t say much. I think he might already know about this, but didn’t tell us until now,” said the assistant candidly.
Wei Yong turned on his laptop and remarked mildly. “If he already knew about it, why would he help us with the filing so enthusiastically?”
“What now?” The assistant looked at Wei Yong powerlessly. “Unless the students revoke their application, there’s no way we’ll get it.”
Wei Yong entered his password into the computer, logged into his mailbox, and checked his mail. After reading one of the emails, the sternness on his face dissipated and he looked happy.
As he went through the email, he asked the assistant without even raising his head. “Where there’s a will there’s a way. Make arrangements with Mr. Qi. I want to speak to him.”
The assistant noticed that Wei Yong did not seem as angry as expected about the patent problem and could not help feeling puzzled. Since Wei Yong was busy working on the computer, the assistant did not continue probing and simply acknowledged his boss.

President Xue brought Min Yu to his office, poured him a glass of water, and produced a piece of paper. “Here are the plans for the submarine. Can you take a look at it?”
Min Yu put down the glass and opened the submarine plans. He glanced at it briefly before he remarked. “Some areas can be improved. The old version is not powerful enough to do what you need.”
President Xue nodded. “I think so too. This is your expertise, so I hope you can help. Take the plans back and make annotations for improvement on the side.”
Min Yu raised his brow and looked at President Xue calmly. “Have you forgotten? I no longer work for you.”
“You might have said you’re quitting, but your HR records and ID are still in the archives room. Do you want to take a look at it for yourself?”
President Xue continued huffily. “How many times do I call you to help? To you, this is easy. You can settle the problems in the same length of time you spend in the toilet, right?”
Min Yu was President Xue’s disciple, but President Xue had zero sway over him. In retrospect, he sometimes felt it had been a mistake to accept Min Yu as his disciple.
Other teachers had thoughtful and respectful students for a start, but Min Yu was far from it.
President Xue sighed inwardly. Before Min Yu had the chance to say no, President Xue rolled up the plan and placed it in Min Yu’s hands forcibly. “It’s settled then.”
Min Yu went quiet.
President Xue cleared his throat and said, “I know you’re a busy man, so I won’t keep you any longer.”
Min Yu went speechless.
Before long, Min Yu went downstairs expressionlessly, holding the submarine plan in his hand.
