Chapter 290 - 290: Too Sweet?
Chapter 290 - 290: Too Sweet?
“Mommy is carrying groceries; let’s go to the kitchen.”
“Okay,” Huo Xuan replied first to his mother and then looked at his father holding the gift box. He said cheerfully, “Daddy, Mommy specially gave you a gift. Aren’t you going to show some appreciation?” Huo Sicheng was speechless for a moment.
A gift?
His hand tightened around the gift box, his heart pounding with excitement and affection.
Hearing Huo Xuan’s comment, Gu Qingcheng’s face changed slightly. In the past, she would have openly admitted buying the tie.
However, since Huo Sicheng left her to meet Miss Li abroad, she had been harboring unresolved feelings. As long as Huo Sicheng didn’t give her a clear answer, she felt uncomfortable seeing him.
“It’s not a special gift from me,” she said. “It’s a gift someone gave to me, and I didn’t want to waste it.”
She then turned and left.
Huo Xuan was surprised at first, then sighed helplessly, telling his father, “I think Mommy didn’t mean to throw you in the trash.”
“I know,” Huo Sicheng replied, opening the gift box, his eyes soft and lips slightly parting. “Your mother is always tough-talking but soft-hearted. Her actions don’t always match her words.”
Huo Xuan saw his father’s expression and peered over.
“That’s beautiful.’
Huo Sicheng, looking at the tie in the box, said softly, “It suits me well. Your mother has good taste.”
Huo Xuan suggested, “Then shouldn’t you do something for Mommy?”
“Do you think your mom would accept anything from me?” Huo Sicheng asked.
Huo Xuan shook his head. “She won’t accept any gifts from you. She’s still angry with you.”
Huo Sicheng’s eyes filled with remorseful helplessness. “I understand.”
“It’s your fault,” Huo Xuan said, recalling the incident at the hotel and feeling angry for his mother. “It’s been so many days. Why haven’t you made up with
Mommy yet? Haven’t you explained things clearly? If you don’t explain, I will.”
“Don’t say anything in front of your mother!” Huo Sicheng warned sternly.
Huo Xuan, seeing his father’s serious expression, pouted and left.
Huo Sicheng took out the tie, his heart and soul filled with thoughts of Gu Qingcheng.
He knew she cared for him; no matter how cold she appeared, she always cared.
Especially after the incident with Qi Shaoze, his restless heart felt somewhat more secure.
In the kitchen, he watched Gu Qingcheng cooking quietly.
Huo Xuan sat in the dining room playing with his computer.
Gu Qingcheng prepared several exquisite dishes, and when a plate of spicy shrimp was served, Huo Xuan was astonished.
“Mommy, there’s so much chili.”
“Your mother likes spicy food,” Huo Sicheng told Huo Xuan softly. “She’s been avoiding it for our sake.”
Huo Xuan looked at his mother sympathetically. “Mommy, in the future, Daddy and I will learn to eat spicy food. You don’t have to accommodate us.”
Gu Qingcheng heard Huo Sicheng and Huo Xuan’s conversation but her gaze was fixed on the tie around Huo Sicheng’s neck.
His tall figure, black suit, white shirt buttoned to the throat, and the tie she bought wrapped around his neck like a silver dragon, made him look even more aloof.
She had to admit, the tie was a perfect choice for Huo Sicheng.
Huo Sicheng followed Gu Qingcheng’s gaze to the tie, saying nothing, just looking at her tenderly.
Gu Qingcheng, caught looking at Huo Sicheng’s tie, felt a hot gaze on her and met his bright, star-like eyes.
In that moment, her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away, saying,
“Let’s eat.”
Huo Xuan witnessed his parents’ exchange.
He hurried through his meal.
Gu Qingcheng noticed Huo Xuan eating quickly and gently advised, “Eat slowly, don’t choke.”
Huo Xuan put down his chopsticks. “I’m not choking. I’ve finished my meal. I have a violin lesson tonight. Mommy, I’m going to class.”
Before Gu Qingcheng could respond, Huo Xuan left the dining room.
She knew Huo Xuan left to give her and Huo Sicheng some privacy.
“What are you doing?” she asked, just having turned from the door to see Huo Sicheng picking up a shrimp. She knocked the shrimp off his chopsticks, scolding, “You have a stomach condition. Why are you eating spicy food?”
Huo Sicheng saw Gu Qingcheng’s angry face, his eyes soft and his heart sweetened.
Gu Qingcheng, looking at Huo Sicheng’s warm gaze, felt her heart flutter.
“I’m not concerned about you. I want to eat this dish myself. If you want to eat, ask the chef to make you a separate dish.”
She coldly moved the plate of shrimp closer to her, inwardly annoyed that her explanation was too obvious.
Huo Sicheng softly said, “I’ll eat the other dishes.” Gu Qingcheng ignored him and continued eating.
After a few bites, Huo Sicheng left the dining room.
Gu Qingcheng appeared not to notice him, but she kept an eye on him and felt blocked up when he left.
She wondered how long Huo Sicheng planned to make her wait for answers to her questions.
As she was about to clear the dishes and leave the villa to return to her apartment, Huo Sicheng re-entered the dining room.
“I just made this,” Huo Sicheng said, placing a glass of lime drink in front of Gu Qingcheng, speaking softly. “It’s refreshing after eating spicy food. And you need to take your medicine soon; it’s good to have something sweet.”
Gu Qingcheng looked at the lime juice, initially wanting to refuse but then seeing the bowl of bitter medicine. Thinking of the effort she put into her treatments, she didn’t want to waste her previous efforts.
She took a sip of the drink, finding it tasted just like what she had in Nice.
Memories flooded her mind, reminding her of when Huo Sicheng had been outwardly harsh but showed care through his actions.
Seeing Gu Qingcheng drink the lime juice he made, Huo Sicheng’s tension eased.
He noticed her pensive look and asked, “Is it too sweet?”
Gu Qingcheng shook her head, “No.”
She drank the medicine in one go, finding it bitter, and then finished the juice
Huo Sicheng made.
Huo Sicheng was about to speak when he saw Gu Qingcheng heading to the kitchen with the dishes.
He watched her with concern but remained silent.
After she finished her chores, Huo Sicheng handed her a lollipop.
Gu Qingcheng’s eyes flickered at the sight of the candy.
Uncontrollably, her mind went back to the time at Huo Corporation, when she was lured by him and foolishly left the corporation after being given a candy.
Everything Huo Sicheng did today reminded her of their past together.
Back then, their relationship was fraught with conflict, almost leading to divorce.
Now, although they hadn’t divorced, their relationship had fallen into a cold and rigid atmosphere.
Seeing Gu Qingcheng lost in thought with the candy, Huo Sicheng asked softly,
“What are you thinking about?”
