Chapter 105 - Box

Chapter 105: Chapter 6 Box

At the junction of Passing District and Newton City, to the west was the woods, to the east was the dilapidated Passing District, and to the north was the Passing River, which extended from Newton and eventually converged with the Charles River. To the south was the southern district of Barton City. There was a motel where it would probably make you think that it would never have a business called ‘Payne’s Rest Stop’.

After the vampire said something to the old man behind the counter with a pair of red eyes, the old man handed a key and gave the room number.

Benjamin sent the two people who were still in a coma to the room, and Zach ‘borrowed’ the phone and called Quest.

“Mr. Quest, we have found them. They are now at Payne’s Rest Stop. The address is…”

“Are they okay? Are they injured? !”

The vampire sometimes admired people’s optimism, even though he had hinted when accepting the commission that he had no plans to find two people alive, but the client still seemed to believe that his younger brother and his sister-in-law were still alive.

“They were not injured, but they were still in a coma.” Zach frowned. He had tried various methods to awake two people, but failed; which was very strange. Zach didn’t want to discuss things that he didn’t know. Before the other party asked more questions, he said, “You can come and pick them up.” Then he hung up the phone.

The old man behind the counter kept looking at Zach with a vigilant look. Zach smiled at him and used the hypnotizing eyes to rearrange his memories again, and left this ‘Payne’s Rest Stop’ with Benjamin.

Heading south from the motel to Grande Funeral Home,

Zach sat in the passenger seat, playing with the metal box that the Gale couple had prepared for them ten days ago. This was a very old Cipher Box. The pattern on the surface of the box had long been corroded by rust. Only the four-digit code wheels on the secret lock directly in front seemed to be smooth due to frequent touch. It was just that the numbers on the code wheels have become a bit worn out, and it would be very hard to see what was engraved unless one looked closely.

Zach patted off the rust on his hands outside the truck window, randomly found a piece of dirty clothes that had been discarded by Benjamin, and wrapped the box, “What do you think this is?”

Benjamin shrugged along with the music on the radio, “It is probably for Ryan.”

Zach nodded. During the few days that the Gale couple lived in Grande, Ryan would always hide in the dark, giving a rare moment of quietness. The two Inans who were in their old age had never asked Ryan to show up. The ‘differences’ of this Inan family were much heavier than Grande had imagined.

Zach threw the box on the front window. It was about eight o’clock now. With the change of seasons, the sunlight was warm and comfortable at the moment. Zach took out the alcohol bottle in his pocket and took a sip, “Do you think the Gale will come back?”

Benjamin shook his head.

Perhaps when Spell was willing to let the vampire into their home, the two had already decided to leave Barton.

Spell had been silently protecting Ryan, who had become an earth-bound spirit. Perhaps when Revenge came to Barton, she had already made a prediction about the future. The Shaman wanted to use her own power to change Ryan’s destiny, but she had obviously failed. Connor’s body had been found and burned by Revenge, and the vampire and the werewolf also joined the incident in a strange way.

When the vampire and the werewolf first came into contact with Connor, the Gale couple realized that an irreversible deviation had occurred.

When the vampire visited The Gale’s house at night, Spell was not surprised. She had already known how the matter would progress and summoned Papa Midnight to make the last attempt. However, Ryan had been completely taken in by the Grande family, a nonhuman family. Maybe it was at this moment, the Gale couple gave up the idea of continuing to live in this city.

It was just that the appearance of the Papa Midnight’s Dead Apostles had delayed the progress.

“I hope it’s her spell book.” Zach raised his eyebrows and began to think positively like a human.

Benjamin smiled, “Maybe it really is.”

The Grande’s “brothers” smiled and returned to the Grande Funeral Home. Matthew, carrying a cloth backpack and riding his old bicycle, arrived at the same time as the two.

Matthew parked the bicycle, walked directly to the office, and handed Zach the weekly work report from Maddison: “Mr. Maddison said that the price of the urns they ordered is more expensive than the Allen Funeral Home, and with the factory has been unwilling to give in during the negotiation.”

Zach was sitting at the office with a glass of ‘wine’ and nodded, “Anything else?”

Matthew looked at Zach; every time when he saw the vampire replenish himself with food, his heart would get short-tempered. But this simple young werewolf believed that this was because he knew that the thing in the glass was blood. If a normal person knew the truth, probably they would also feel uncomfortable!

Zach squinted, watching Matthew stare at his throat, put down his wine glass, and asked again: “Anything else?”

“Oh!” Matthew came back from the daze. As a guy who would turn into a wolf during the full moon, he didn’t think he was qualified to think that others were ‘weird’. Matthew lowered his head in embarrassment, “No, Mr. Maddison would like you to take time to check it out, that’s all.”

Suddenly, the vampire had a mischievous idea. He beckoned to this young man, signaling him to sit down: “Matthew, did Benjamin tell you the origin of werewolves?”

Matthew didn’t expect Zach to ask this suddenly, he shook his head: “Not yet. He only talked about something related to the transformation, Alpha, and Wolves, these things.”

Zach groped his fingers on the edge of the wine glass, revealing a contemplating look, “Aren’t you curious? Why do people turn into wolves when the moon is full?”

“Are you saying why there are werewolves?” Matthew was stunned. It seemed that this young man had never thought about this question, “Is it a very important thing?”

Zach was stumped, stroking his chin, “Define important.”

“Euh.” Matthew scratched his head: “For example, it will make me earn more Dors, or make my father’s back pain better, and make my mother’s work easier…”

Zach smiled and waved, “Well, it’s really unimportant if you compare it this way.”

“Oh.” Matthew looked at his big boss and really didn’t know what he wanted to express.

“Matthew, do you want to make more extra money?” Zach asked.

“Yes.” Matthew’s eyes lit up suddenly.

“Mhm.” Zach nodded, “I want to install a new phone. Grande Funeral Home only has one phone at the moment, which is very inconvenient. How about leaving this to you?”

“Okay!” Matthew nodded, stood up unintentionally, and seriously agreed.

“Don’t get so excited.” Zach smiled helplessly, “This is a very troublesome task. You need to change the phone number of our Grande Funeral Home. The newly installed phone will become our work phone. The numbers on the business card, phone book, and the way customers contact us will all need to be updated.”

“No problem!” Matthew’s eyes were sparkling. The more troublesome it was, the more money he would be able to earn.

“Okay, you can leave now.” Zach waved, “Ask Ryan to come in.”

“Oh.” Matthew’s face suddenly turned ugly all of a sudden, Ryan was the most incomprehensible ‘person’ at Grande Funeral Home. When he saw this guy for the first time, he almost fell into the toilet!

“I’m here, no need to call.”

Shadow began to condense in the office. When Matthew heard this sound, the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. No matter how many times he had heard it, he couldn’t adapt to the way the earthbound spirit appeared.

If Matthew could really distinguish between ordinary people’s reactions to strange things and his reaction to Zach, he would realize something. But obviously, the young man was a little obtuse in this regard.

Matthew left a little nervously, leaving two ‘people’ behind.

“Benjamin told me that I have a package.” Ryan floated at the desk and assumed a sitting position, but his translucent butt was still a finger away from the chair, and the vampire was not going to point that out.

Zach took out the box wrapped in the clothes Benjamin didn’t want, put it on the table, and corrected Ryan’s statement, “It’s not yours, it’s for us.”

Ryan rolled his eyes impatiently. He was almost the same age as Matthew, but his personality was obviously the opposite of Matthew.

“Quick, open it! What is it?”

Zach opened the clothes helplessly, revealing the rusty iron box inside, and turned to Ryan.

The earthbound spirit itself had no weaknesses because it was the soul and consciousness of the dead man remaining in this world. But it also had no particular “strength”. But some substances could affect them, such as iron. Iron would make them lose consciousness and dissipate.

Ryan’s face showed a complex look. He stretched out his transparent fingers, as if he wanted to touch the metal box, but the moment his fingers touched it, the scattered shadow disappeared, and the faint blue smoke appeared in Ryan’s fingers and continued to spread upward.

Ryan moved back his hand, shaking his body a few times, and his hand returned to its original shape.

“Do you know this thing?” Zach looked at Ryan’s expression, “Do you know the password?”

Ryan nodded, “It’s my mother’s box, which contains the diary and the spell book, and the formula of some medicines.” Ryan seemed to be immersed in his past memory.

It seemed that keeping an optimistic attitude was right. Zach raised his eyebrows and looked at Ryan mockingly, “So you peeked at the contents and managed to kill yourself?”

Ryan’s face was sullen, the edges of his body seemed to be vibrating erratically. The earthbound spirit’s sore spot was poked by the vampire, and it was angered. But unlike real living beings, the earthbound spirit’s anger had no effect on other people except for affecting his own consciousness.

“All right, all right.” Zach stopped irritating Ryan, “Here is your mother’s diary. I think you want to read it. Tell me the password.”

Ryan calmed down, still having a sullen face, and uttered a few numbers.

Zach turned the box around and turned the code wheels. In the not-so-clear clicking sound, the lid of the box bounced, and the iron filings in the corners fell on the desk under the vibration. Zach looked through the box, and there was a letter at the top that said: “To Ryan”.

Zach rang the bell on the desk. Then, Alice, the banshee walked in. Zach patted Alice on the shoulder and passed the box. Alice looked at the contents of the box, then at Ryan who had a complicated look. She took a few deep breaths, nodded, and left with the box.
