Chapter 55: 55: Return Home
Xu Yang’s parents, Xu Deming and Jiang Qiuping, own a supermarket in a bustling area of the county town. Life was pretty good for them; they managed to save about one hundred thousand yuan a year after expenses.
Today, Xu Deming and Jiang Qiuping had closed shop early and returned home to prepare dinner.
The thought of their son bringing his wife home filled their hearts with immense joy.
Jiang Qiuping, in particular, couldn’t stop smiling all day long.
Just now, they had received a message from Xu Yang, saying he had gotten off the highway and was almost home, so they both headed downstairs.
Xu Deming remained composed, his expression perfectly calm, what he felt inside, only he knew.
Jiang Qiuping was still her usual self, smiling and greeting everyone she saw, much more enthusiastic than usual.
Anyone could see that she was delighted.
“Sister Qiuping, you look so happy, what’s the good news?” a neighborly auntie asked.
“My son is coming home today, he’ll be here shortly,” Jiang Qiuping replied cheerfully.
“Xu Yang is coming back? It’s been so long since I’ve seen him.”
The neighbor was puzzled; it was just their son coming back for Mid-Autumn Festival, wasn’t it? Why all the excitement?
“My son is coming back, and he’s bringing my daughter-in-law with him,” as if reading the neighbor’s confusion, Jiang Qiuping added this on her own initiative.
“Oh, so Xu Yang is bringing his girlfriend home!” the neighbor suddenly understood, which explained Jiang Qiuping’s happiness.
Any family would be delighted to have their child bring a girlfriend home.
“Not a girlfriend, but my daughter-in-law,” Jiang Qiuping corrected.
“I know, your daughter-in-law.” The neighborly aunt obviously missed Jiang Qiuping’s point.
Jiang Qiuping wanted to explain further, to say that they had already registered their marriage, but Xu Deming stopped her.
If they mentioned the registration, it would inevitably lead to talk of a wedding.
That conversation could drag on indefinitely, and since they didn’t know what their son was thinking or when he would have a wedding ceremony, it wasn’t good to say too much.
Jiang Qiuping got the hint and dropped the subject.
“Old Xu, is Xu Yang bringing his girlfriend home?” Another neighbor approached, a middle-aged man.
About the same age as Xu Deming, he walked over and offered Xu Deming a cigarette.
The two middle-aged men simply smoked and chatted together.
“Hmm, he says he’s bringing his girlfriend home,” Xu Deming said, a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
“Old Xu, your son Xu Yang is really something. My own boy, graduated so long and still no job, not to mention a girlfriend, it’s driving me to despair,” lamented the middle-aged neighbor with a sour look on his face.
“Young people have their own ways of thinking, let them figure things out by themselves. Don’t you worry too much,” Xu Deming said with a laugh.
As people gathered around to chat, more and more joined in.
The men smoked and talked, while the women just chatted, their conversation even more lively.
After all, when it came to children and their marriages, it was always a topic of special interest.
Everyone knew Xu Deming and Jiang Qiuping’s son was coming home, and he was bringing a girlfriend. They all wanted to see what Xu Yang’s girlfriend looked like.
As they chatted, a car slowly drove up.
“Holy shit, that’s a Rolls-Royce Cullinan!”
One of the smokers, spotting the car that had pulled up, couldn’t help but exclaim aloud, dropping his cigarette to the ground in his astonishment.
“What’s a Rolls-Royce Cullinan? Is that car any good?” someone clueless inquired.
“Car noob!” the person who exclaimed retorted with disdain, “The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the most luxurious SUV, worth almost ten million, so you tell me if it’s good or not?”
Hiss…
Hearing his words, the crowd instantly let out a collective gasp of awe.
“Good grief, a ten million yuan luxury car!”
“The most expensive houses in our neighborhood are like half a million, right? This car could buy twenty of those houses.”
“Who’s driving such an expensive car? Does anyone in our neighborhood even have that kind of money?”
“I have no idea, maybe someone made big bucks outside.”
“I really want to see who’s gotten rich and drives such a fancy car back here—it’s like they’re not letting us live!”
Everyone’s gaze fell on the Rolls-Royce that was slowly approaching.
Soon, the Rolls-Royce stopped in front of the crowd.
The car door opened, and out stepped a man and a woman.
“That’s… Xu Yang!”
“Oh my God! Xu Yang came back driving a luxury car worth tens of millions!”
“Hiss… Xu Yang got rich?”
“Xu Yang just graduated and started working for a listed company. Even though he has a good job, he couldn’t afford a luxury car close to ten million.”
“No clue what’s going on, let’s ask later.”
The people who saw Xu Yang were all stunned.
They were all from the same neighborhood and were acquainted with Xu Yang’s family.
As soon as Xu Yang got out of the car, they recognized him.
“Mom, Dad, I’m back.” Xu Yang greeted his parents and walked over to Zhao Yuxin’s side, taking her hand and introducing her, “Mom, Dad, this is Yu Xin, your daughter-in-law.”
His parents hadn’t formally met Zhao Yuxin yet; they had only seen her picture. Since Zhao Yuxin looked identical to Zhao Yulu, an introduction was still necessary.
“Dad, Mom,” Zhao Yuxin called out somewhat shyly.
Xu Deming just nodded slightly, keeping a composed demeanor as the head of the family.
Unlike Jiang Qiuping, who joyfully stepped forward upon hearing the introduction, took Zhao Yuxin’s hand, and asked with concern, “Yu Xin, finally we meet you. Have you been tired from traveling all day?”
Warmth filled Zhao Yuxin’s heart, “Mom, I’m not tired.”
Xu Yang didn’t pay much attention to the two of them, instead greeting the uncles and aunties around, and even took out cigarettes from the car, distributing them to every smoking uncle.
“Xu Yang, now you’re driving a Rolls-Royce. What kind of job are you doing in Jiangcheng? It can’t be an ordinary job,” said the person who had gasped in astonishment earlier.
“I’m doing a bit of business,” Xu Yang answered vaguely.
“Xu Yang, is this car really worth ten million?” one of the uncles inquired.
“Not that much, only eight million,” Xu Yang honestly replied.
After all, driving this car back would definitely spark a lot of discussions.
Some of the older people might not know the price, but the younger ones definitely would, so there was no need to hide anything.
“Eight million, eight million…” the uncle muttered in astonishment.
To him, there was no difference between eight million and ten million because he could never earn that much money in his lifetime.
After a brief chat, Xu Yang went to open the trunk to get something.
“Eight million for a car, that’s really eye-opening.”
“Xu Yang has really made something of himself, the Xu couple are so fortunate.”
“Yeah, Xu Yang even brought back such a beautiful daughter-in-law.”
“Tsk tsk, if my son had one tenth of Xu Yang’s achievements, I’d be completely content.”
“One tenth? If my son had even one percent of Xu Yang’s success, I’d wake up laughing from my dreams.”
There was various chatter among the crowd.
“Let’s disperse, let’s disperse. Don’t get in the way of the Xu family reunion.”
“Right, right, instead of this, we should go home and have a good talk with our own kids, tell them to learn from Xu Yang in the future.”
“As if they could learn that, Xu Yang’s driving an eight million car, if my child could earn eight million in their lifetime, I’d be satisfied.”
The crowd slowly dispersed.
