Chapter 259: Flee for Your Life
Seeing the surveillance device, the three men’s faces suddenly turned unpleasant.
They had initially thought they could conduct their search undetected, but unexpectedly, their adversary was so cunning, having laid a vast web of monitoring devices, like an omnipresent eye, watching their every move. “Damn it! That doctor must’ve set this up!” Chu Ping’s eyes squinted as he pulled out a pistol from his backpack, aiming it at the surveillance device and pulling the trigger.
Bang-
A clear gunshot rang out, sparking a spray of sparks from the surveillance device.
“We’ve been discovered. Start scattering and search, find that doctor as soon as possible. Should you find him, don’t act rashly. Signal first, then attack when we’re together!” Ma Jiang quickly instructed.
Now that they’d been discovered, there was no more need for cautious investigation. Although Fifth Avenue was large, many of the buildings had already collapsed, so a thorough search wouldn’t take too long.
The target was merely an unarmed researcher. Against any one of them, he stood no chance of putting up a fight, so Ma Jiang wasn’t worried that they would be defeated one by one.
“Understood!” The three of them pulled out a device and began to act separately.
It was a life-detecting device, and each team member had one, specifically used to search for targets hiding in the city.
The range of the detector was only three hundred meters. To find a person throughout the entirety of Fifth Avenue, it would probably take a long time, especially since their target already knew about them. If Dr. Ebsiting took the opportunity to escape, their long effort would be in vain.
“So you have me cornered, thinking that even if 1 run, there’s nowhere to hide?” Ebsiting gazed at their unmasked search activities, revealing a trace of coldness in his eyes.
Initially, he wasn’t sure if he was their target. But after seeing their insignia and the series of actions that followed, Dr. Ebsiting was certain of their enemy status.
“I won’t be caught a second time by people from the Gathering Area 101!” Dr. Ebsiting murmured to himself, beginning to hastily gather his belongings, preparing to escape.
Whatever could not be taken away would be destroyed. The entire lab was a mess. Every item here had cost Dr. Ebsiting plenty of time to find in the entire city, even nearly costing him his life.
Looking at the chaos, a painful expression appeared in Dr. Ebsiting’s eyes.
Sighing, he placed various precious materials and data on a silver metallic panel floating before him. Tapping lightly on the panel, it immediately began folding automatically.
The initial one-square-meter metal panel, after several folds, turned into a palm-sized polyhedral metal sphere.
Ebsiting grasped the metal sphere, putting it in his pocket. He slung a backpack as large as himself over his shoulders, sprayed an entire bottle of repellant on his body, and prepared to leave this safe house that he had personally created.
Qi Yun, at this point, was also holding the life detection device, and had come near the residence where Ebsiting was based. Soon, a red humanoid figure appeared on the center of the device screen.
“Captain, I detected life activity. He seems to be preparing to leave this area!” Qi Yun informed his two teammates through his shoulder-mounted radio.
“Hold your position!” Ma Jiang’s voice came through the radio.
Minutes later, Ma Jiang and Chu Ping appeared almost simultaneously at the place where Qi Yun was.
“Is it this residential area?” asked Ma Jiang.
“Yes. I was able to detect his life activity earlier, but it’s gone now. He must have left the detection range.” replied Qi Yun.
“This block…I feel something eerie, like there’s something that could threaten our lives…” Chu Ping said, furrowing his eyebrows and staring at the exuberant luxurious villa residential area in front of them.
“An ordinary researcher could survive here, why should we fear?” Qi Yun sneered at Chu Ping. “Are you saying you’re not even as capable as an unarmed old man?”
“If it wasn’t for the captain’s orders, I might have already caught the guy by now.” grumbled Qi Yun.
“Let’s go in together and search, mark the last spot where the life activity disappeared!” Ma Jiang said calmly, seemingly ignoring Qi Yun’s complaints.
Qi Yun touched the detector a few more times, marking where the life activity of Ebsiting disappeared, transmitted the information to the other two, and the three used each other as ladders to jump over the wall of the community and headed towards the marked point.
Swish-
The sound of wind rustling the leaves echoed through the residential area. Ma Jiang frowned, sharing Chu Ping’s intuition that there was something unnerving about this place.
Such a large area, yet there wasn’t a single creature, and the plants around were too densely grown and extraordinarily large, as if they had been growing for hundreds of years.
“Why is it so quiet here? There’s so much vegetation, yet there’s not even a hint of insect or bird sounds!” Qi Yun muttered while running.
Suddenly, Ma Jiang was taken aback. He abruptly realized something – there was an unknown danger in this residential area.
“Be careful, there’s something strange about this place!” warned Ma Jiang.
Just then, Ma Jiang noticed a shadow swooping in front of him. Instinctively, he put his left hand in front of him.
Clang-
With a loud noise, Ma Jiang’s body was flung away like a baseball by a thick vine.
After landing, Ma Jiang rolled twice on the ground. When he looked up, he was shocked to see that a gigantic willow tree had uprooted itself just three meters from where he had stood, and a grotesque human face appeared on the trunk.
The vine that had flung him looked like a giant python, coiling around the tree.
“Mutated Tree Spirit, a level 10 elite Boss Mutated Tree Spirit!” Chu Ping shouted, his face showing surprise.
Plant-type monsters wouldn’t reveal their properties unless they initiated an attack. Even if you walked right by them, you wouldn’t see their characteristics until they attacked you.
Rumble-
All the plants in the entire residential area began to violently tremble. Even from a distance, a green giant figure emerged slowly from a vast lawn, with numerous weeds taller than a human winding around it like snakes, becoming part of the giant body.
Roar-
The tall and burly green giant let out a roar and strode towards the trio.
“Retreat, retreat, get out of here now!” Ma Jiang pulled out a bottle of potion and gulped it down, shouting loudly.
Soon, the three men were fleeing like scared dogs towards the place they’d first entered, followed by a large number of various plant monsters chasing them like a tidal wave.
