Chapter 239: Chapter 167: How to Join Forces Against Stevenson Part 3
On hearing that it was the Tax Bureau, the staff member didn\'t dare to obstruct them any longer and quickly stepped aside.
Without beating around the bush, David and the others immediately proceeded, and quickly came to a rest area.
Having lost their target, Nisen could only randomly grab a staff member and ask, "Excuse me, where is Mr. Lawson Rubins\'s resting room?"
"Right there, turn left, the second door."
Without delay, David and his team followed the directions and indeed found the entrance to a resting room guarded by two bodyguards.
"What are you doing?"
Upon seeing David and his party approaching, the bodyguards at the door immediately became vigilant.
Nisen also lifted the tax emblem and said, "We\'re from the Tax Bureau, our Chief Tax Officer wants to have a word with your Mr. Lawson Rubins."
Hearing that it was the Tax Bureau, the bodyguard hesitated for a moment but still opened the door and went inside, saying, "Mr. Lawson Rubins, there\'s someone from the Tax Bureau at the door, they say they want to see you."
At that moment, Lawson Rubins had already loosened his tie and was enjoying a steak when he was startled by these words.
Ultimately, he had no choice but to re-adjust his collar and said, "Then, let them come in!"
"Very well, sir."
The bodyguard turned and walked out the door, and the next second, David also walked in, applauding as he said, "Mr. Lawson Rubins, your speech was excellent. As soon as the Senatorial election officially begins, I will definitely cast my vote for you!"
Initially, Lawson was quite pleased to hear this, since he was here for an academic lecture mainly to boost his popularity and garner votes.
He was about to respond with words of gratitude, but when he focused on seeing half of David\'s face, he suddenly froze.
David took off his hat and mask and said with a beaming smile, "Mr. Lawson, it seems you recognize me."
"David... Chief Tax Officer!"
Lawson had thought David looked familiar, and now that the mask and hat were removed, his suspicion was confirmed.
Before him was none other than the \'Iron Fist Tax Chief\' who had recently been in the spotlight within the Tax Bureau system!
"That\'s me."
David didn\'t stand on ceremony and directly pulled over a chair, sitting down with a commanding presence.
Lawson\'s brows furrowed slightly. Being sought out by the Tax Bureau was generally not a good sign, especially when the person doing the seeking was such a ruthless Chief Tax Officer.
After mulling it over for a while, he tentatively asked, "Director David, my tax affairs are handled by a specialist. I believe there are no issues, so what is your purpose in seeking me out?"
"Don\'t be so tense, Mr. Lawson. I\'m just here to have a chat with you today," David said.
"Alright then, what would you like to talk about?" Continue your journey with m|v-l\'-NovelBin
"As far as I know, you don\'t have a good relationship with Governor Stevenson?"
"We just have minor political disagreements; that\'s common knowledge. Personally, we don\'t have any big grudges."
David smiled and said, "Really? Then why would Governor Stevenson ask me to take you down?"
"What did you say!?"
Lawson was initially shocked and then stared at David with a questioning gaze.
"I meant what I said. You claim to have no personal quarrels with Governor Stevenson, but he wants to destroy you; what do you think about that now?"
"Stevenson sent you to deal with me?"
David nodded, remaining silent.
Lawson fell silent as well, his expression changing as he pondered.
After a moment, David spoke, "Mr. Lawson, since Governor Stevenson wants to take you down, and since I\'ve already taken a dislike to him, how about... we team up and fight back against him?"
Lawson looked at David for about 5 seconds and then suddenly laughed before responding, "Director David, you put it quite interestingly. The Tax Bureau is in charge of taxation, and I am only a candidate right now, without the right or position to retaliate against anything."
Lawson was no fool; on the contrary, he was very astute to dare run for Senator.
Stevenson and David clearly had a grudge. Why then would Stevenson compel David to target him?
It was evident that Stevenson had something on David.
With David\'s character well known, he wouldn\'t be someone easily manipulated, and a struggle between the two was inevitable.
Why not enjoy watching them fight from the sidelines?
Why bother getting involved?
Now, at a critical point in the election, if he got involved, Stevenson would surely make more trouble for him.
Yet if he stayed out of it, letting David restrain Stevenson, he would face much less resistance and be able to focus more on the election.
"Mr. Lawson, I came to you with utmost sincerity and opened up so candidly, don\'t ruin the good impression I have of you?" David said, his tone becoming more serious as he detected the cunning in the other\'s words.
Lawson spread his hands: "Director David, I am very grateful that you have come to me in person to inform me of this, but like I said, I am just a candidate with no authority or position. I\'m afraid there\'s nothing I can do to help!"
Seeing that the other party was so uncooperative, David didn\'t waste any more words and just stretched his hand back towards Nisen.
And Nisen immediately passed a file bag into his hand.
