Chapter 325: Collateral Damage
-Random Talent: 75PP (+5)
-Random Physical Talent: 80PP (+10)
-Random Trade Talent: 150PP (+25)
-Random Passive Talent: 350PP (+25)
Wow, they\'re so cheap! William hadn\'t looked at the Talent Shop in a long time, so he was pleasantly surprised to see the incredibly low prices of each Talent purchase.
Less than a hundred Potential Points for a Physical Talent? Yes, please!
System, purchase one hundred Random Physical Talents! William made decisive action.
-108000 PP
-Spinning Talents, please wait.
Wow, buying a hundred Talents all at once is still quite expensive...
William hadn\'t bothered to do the math himself on how much it would cost, but after checking the cost of a Physical Talent, he found that it was now 1080 Potential Points if he wanted to purchase another one.
While it was still quite cheap in William\'s eyes, he had severely underestimated inflation.
The System sent a wave of messages in William\'s vision, starting with a row of ten consecutive "Talent Purchased: Nothing". It was quite devastating, to say the least, especially when those were the cheapest of the one hundred purchases.
The eleventh message finally gave William some good news, followed by roughly a dozen more messages amidst the Nothing\'s.
-Talent Purchased: Hard Muscles
Hard Muscles? How does that even work? They\'re supposed to be flexible, not tough.
William\'s question was answered almost immediately by an unbelievably intense pain that even the pain resistance effect from his Mind Talent couldn\'t fully suppress. His muscles were ripped straight out from his body, dangling in midair while his crippled self could no longer stand.
He used his Spiritual Qi to float in the air, watching as his old muscles were disintegrated by an unknown force. No ashes were left behind, and the pain subsided quickly.
New muscles grew underneath William\'s skin, stretched to ensure maximum flexibility, then hardened like steel and stretched again. Movement was a bit difficult to get used to, but William felt he would grow accustomed in time.
-Talent Purchased: Sturdy
William didn\'t feel anything from this Talent, so he checked the System Panel for more information.
It was a Rare Talent, which was described as a Talent that would allow him to remain still under many circumstances, even when blasted by fierce winds. In his opinion, this Talent belonged in the Passive Talents list rather than Physical, but he didn\'t make the rules.
It seems more like a support ability. If I rank it up enough, maybe even a volcanic eruption won\'t be able to move me. William surmised.
A few more nothings and two consecutive Talents appeared: Hard Bones and Swift Feet.
Just like the Hard Muscles Talent, William\'s bones were torn from his body very painfully, while the new ones regrew with the help of the Regeneration Talent. Just like his Muscles, his Bones became hard like steel, but there was no need to stretch them repeatedly for flexibility, so it was much less painful.
Swift Feet was a very unique Physical Talent compared to the others. It was a Common Talent like many, but it seemed to apply more to swimming than it did running. If anything, William would prefer to label it was Agile Ankles, because that\'s what was really happening.
The speed at which his feet moved up and down increased greatly, but the rotational ability also increased, allowing him to turn both feet perfectly sideways like a penguin and even continue rotating them outward until they had flipped almost 180 degrees.
This is kinda freaky, I better hide this skill from the ladies.
Girls hated gross-looking things. That\'s why William would never consider changing his race from that of a human. What would the cute and innocent Charlotte think if William showed up to her room with warts like a toad or scaly like a lizard?
She\'s very pure, maybe she wouldn\'t mind it. But I would!
-You\'re quite ugly as it is, maybe she\'d understand if you said you weren\'t human.
Ugly? Excuse you, I am handsome!
-In your dreams maybe.
Now I know why you said you chose the wrong Host. Clearly, you\'re ashamed to admit that I\'m perfect!
The System didn\'t reply, but William received a blurry mental image of a girl sticking her tongue out at him while making an L with her fingers. The L-shaped gesture was especially sharpened, as if he was looking at an HD-video, while the rest was more like an 8-bit video game.
Is that you, System? William asked. He had been wondering this for a while now, but he was starting to think that the System was a female human, judging by how it acted. Though he couldn\'t be sure.
The System didn\'t respond, only repeating the same mental image as if taunting him.
It worked. William\'s face turned bright red with anger as he proceeded to unleash the foulest curses he could think of, honed year after year while bickering with his gamer sister, Fria. If Fria were here, she\'d probably applaud William for his varied language, that was much more elaborate and profound than any first-person shooter video game.
You\'re a... poop head. He finished with a sigh. He had run out of things to say.
-Poop head? You\'ve lived twenty-one years and that\'s the best you can come up with?
The System taught William a lesson, using his memories with Fria against him to unleash a sinister wave of curses, thousands of times more deadly than anything William could ever think of.
To top it off, the Talent Shop was still making purchases, so William\'s thoughts were occasionally interrupted by a spark of pain whenever a body-modifying Talent was announced.
By the end of it, William was left broken both physically and mentally. He had been thoroughly scarred from the System\'s unfiltered roasting, which had clearly been refined with thousands or maybe even tens of thousands of years of experience.
Alright, System. You win.
-As always. It\'s good that you know your place.
William shook his head while smiling helplessly. Even though the System had said some hurtful things, he could sense through their connection that it, no... she didn\'t mean it. If anything, he felt like the System was in a way accepting him as its Host.
Now what do I do about all these Talents... William wondered as he looked through the wave of System Messages. His body still hurt from the pain of losing and regaining many vital parts, but the new Talents pushed all those negative thoughts away in an instant.
